Re: GAZ 53L 4,3L V8 Engine Electronic Ignition
Hi guys, acc. to Russian engine sites the GAZ 53 engine is a modified Olds design similar to the 3,5 Rover engine found in the Land / Range rover and Rover 3500. The block is alu and can stand ca 200-250 HP . The version found in the Chaika is the large bore 100/80mm ca 5Ltr ca 200HP. The engine is ...

Re: Overpowered versus Light
Hi Tomazs, where do you live? If you are in the EU it will not be a problem for you to buy a new crate engine GAZ 53 from stock in Bulgaria. If you are in the US or Canada try a friends shop - perfornace research in Columbus Ohio - you will find them on the net, they marinize small blocks and blue- ...

Re: Starter motor
Hi , Simon, in BG. -Sofia there remained only a shop or two selling spares for GAZ 53/66. These trucks are too expensive to run as they are thirsty - 24-28 litres of petrol /100Klm. Most of them are converted to diesel - Perkins engine- very slow like a tractor. Starters can be found for E 100-250 a...

Re: Oils used for Volga engine and transmission?
Merhaba Goro bey, as all Russian engines of the time 1955-1990 use the same oil grades you can pour 10W-40 or 15W-40 semi-synthetic/ all season/. Full synthetic 5W-30 or 5W-40 would be too much good for this engine, the oil seals would leak . Tested on Gaz 24 and 53 engines. For the gearbox yo...

Re: Barn find
Hi Alex, The GM 350 petrol is an extremely reliable engine. I do not know which version you have in the boat. but it is ok if everything is there. the fuel consumption depends on the Rpm so put a rev limiter for the Volga it is 3200-3300 -1 Min. Another thing : mesure the compression of the cylinder...

Re: Barn find
Hi Alexander, the GM 350 Diesel is the nightmare of every mechanic or driver, on both sides of the Atlantic. It has head problems - the cylinderheads crack! A lot of vibrations. Too heavy ! A friend of mine had a Cadillac diesel with this Oldsmobile diesel engine - a lot of prblems even after rebuil...

Re: Barn find
Hi Alexander, great find, congratulations. The boat hull seems to be in a good condition. You will have a lot of work ahead this winter in order to be able to sail the next summer. A350 chevy engine is too heavy and overpowered for this boat. It has been designed /exatly the foils/ to run at about 3...

Re: New member
Ship ahoi, Mark and Georg, the idea is to use the Volga for fuel efficiency. And not to forget for comfortable flying over the waves. The hydrofoil boats/ships were designet to reach 30-40Knts with half the needed power/fuel consumption required for gliders, we can not compare it with ships in displ...

Nice pics. Joro.
usta did a good job, very tidy!
I like the copper tubing for the cooling water.
and if it runs like it looks it will be great!
does the engine have a hydraulic clutch? converter? it looks so. Than this expalins the 405 Kg weight of the engine...

Re: New member
Well Georg, as I have written earlier the GAZ 53 engine can be stroked and bored up - with new liners and pistons to reach 5,5 - 6,0litres, The heads allow you to use pistons with a diameter up to 110mm, the crankshaft of a PAZ bus has a stroke of 88 instead of 80,00MM. You could use the pistons of ...

Re: New member
Hello Georg, 405 KG is too much. Perhaps the marinized version has an extra heavy flywheel? Normally the flywheel can be reduced by turning on a lathe to just ca.8-10,- Kg. We have done tyhis here in Sofia on GAZ 53 engines for trucks and jeeps. The V8 runs steady at 450-600Rpm. and does not need th...

Re: New member
Hi Mark, thank you for the correction. I must have read something else or taken the weight of the full set: engine plus gear-box. there are a lot of different versions of the same engine on the site of Yanmar Marine. Even so we are discussing the Volga Hydrofoil, which is a mix of a plane and a boat...

Re: Almost out of paint booth!
Hi Adam, Your Boat looks great as a design. I am curious how it will turn out in reality. Post pics. As to the engine - prop combination, pls post some data of the engine like a dynochart or at least Max. HP and Torque at given Rpm. Than one could form a notion and try to give some recommendations. ...
