V-drive gear broken

edit: Fixed picture and link

Hello All,

I was cruising yesterday with my newly bought Volga (which has GAZ53 and V-drive). After cruising 30 miles to a near by port and then the same 30 miles back the V-gear broke, just as I was returning to port. It seems that it had leaked all the oil I added to the bilge and consequently heated up. So, as you guys have better knowledge of these things, should i go for a ZF63IV or just try to find a replacement V-gear? (I will pull out the current one and inspect it first when I have the time)

So this ended up happening:
Volga being towed
Volga being towed
And heres a video what the V-gear sound like now: http://youtu.be/OJ8l8xrDVTc

Actually now that I looked into it I suspect that the reduction gear is the broken part. When having the gear in any position there is no resistance to turning of the axle.

I will take the motor out to see how bad it looks. I have another gear that is broken on the output axle end so I should be able to assemble 1 function gear from these.

The Vdrive you have is Vdrive only.
I have rebuild 1 for a friend od my.
Also rebuild my URRP-25 gearbox. (its on the forum)
I hope you will be able to repair your gearbox..

Hi,

Actually the axle coupling was broken. It did not even have a grease nipple and was basically rusted to atoms from the inside. I had a new one made last winter and now it works.
