We sold our 1979 Volga to the company that I work for. It still needs to be restored though, but we have a name for it: RedBox One.

They are for sale: 2 fully restored "Volgas" with brand new Volvo-Penta D3-160 with DPS and X8 props, 14 l/h at 60 km/h, 10 passangers + 1 of crew, hardtop saloon, wheelhouse at the rear deck, commercial class (Poland, EU)

my friend owns exactly this boat, as far as our experience, while cruising on low speeds, this boat is quite difficult to steer. definetly on the amsterdam canals. can be difficult to take some sharp turns, at least thats what we experienced we even thought about putting an "boegschroef" (bow thruster?) in it.
on higher speeds, it is quite good to handle and lots of fun.

@Sammy: You're absolutely right about the difficulty with steering at slow speeds. We usually just pick a broad canal and keep going straight ahead. Turns are terrible, especially to starboard. Once the canal was blocked somewhere halfway, and we ended up making 270 degree turns to get to a parallel channel, because a 90 degree sharp turn to the right is just impossible!
As for the bow thruster (or "boegschroef"): a few years ago there was a company buying Volga's and restoring them. I think the name of the company was Jet Technologies and their boat was referred to as the "riva on wings" (while writing this reply I looked for their website, but they seem to have disappeared). Anyway, the first thing they did was add a bowthruster, and with good reason. Manoeuvring a 29' boat that refuses to do starboard-turns into a berth can be a real pain at times! See pic below.

a broad canals... haha they are not broad enough for these kinda boats . unless, ofcourse, you got a bow thruster under it. in someparts of the Vecht we have to do all kinda tricks to turn the thing around
but hey, thats the fun of it! besides that, you cant go full throttle on the canals...
if i am not mistaken, this boat was an ex-kgb/army boat(?) . the guy got it from Russia. somewhere , (thats what they told him then) on the front deck you can still see the holes where they had machine guns mounted!
the window you have on your boat , the "roundish"one, is that one original? which engine you put in it? my friend has a Volvo Penta 220Hp in it. "gaat als de brandweer"

We try to stick to one canal and follow it to the end...
Our boat is also a former army boat. We found some distinct army colors under the thick layers of more recent paint, and we also have some big holes in the front deck, though I am not sure if these were for mounting machineguns. We were told however that the boat was mainly used for R&R by army officers.
The round window is indeed original, check this old picture* for comparison:
As for the engine in our "officer's boat": it's a GAZ-49b engine, which is a slightly more modern version of the original 6 cylinder GAZ-53 engine. This 49b engine came out of a BTR-60 armoured vehicle (which had 2 of them) and supposedly has 110 BHP, although I heard that our engine has 90 BHP. Not sure what is the right value. In any case, it's about as thirsty for gasoline as a you'd expect of a old military engine like this, so we're hoping to put in something slightly more modern, slightly more powerful and slightly less thirsty soon. And definetely a diesel.
Btw, I like the color-scheme of the Volga of your friend! The white will make very visible that the whole boat is really 'flying' above the water! Is this boat by any chance one of the boats owned by (family of) the real-estate agent with an office on the Prinsengracht?

So let me explain some things, I'm russian and I've got one:
-'Volga' has never been in military service (only for general's leisure);
-original engines are: GAZ-51(52)-6cil.,77hp; GAZ-53-8cil.,100hp on late version, V-drive;
-'Volga-70' is an export variant with Volvo Penta diesel and Z-drive (one got Nixon as a gift from Brezhnev in 1972);
-production ended up in 1986;
-she is still popular in Russia;
and finally: Rostislav Alekseev was a genius constructor!

Welcome to the forum! I am glad to see more and more people from all over the world coming to this site to find or exchange information about these great boats! For me it is still amazing that I own a boat that was built in 1965, a real 'classic', that can go faster than most modern speedboats, and looks twice as cool!
Please, if you find the time, could you tell more about your boat? Where did you find, what was it used for earlier (and by who - perhaps generals?), in what year was it built, which engine-type and what hull-number? And please add pictures of the current status and/or progress pictures during your restoration!
Another thing: I have been busy trying to collect as much information as possible on the Molnia/Strela/Volga/Volga70/Volga275 types as possible, to find out which shipyards they were produced, what engines, what years and so on, just so I can create a full historical account of the history of these boats. It is however very difficult to find information - my main source is the internet, and the kind visitors and members of this website who are willing to share their knowledge. It seems to me that most of the history of this boat is only available for those who master the Russian language - and I am afraid that I am not (yet) one of them. So if you have any more information to share for the Volga-Wiki (send to admin@volga-hydrofoil.net), or if you are willing to help create/improve a historical overview of the Volga family of boats on the wiki, then it would be very much appreciated!
